Topping-out for giant looping roller coaster, named The Gauntlet, is held at Magic Springs Theme Park in Hot Springs

HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK, Arkansas — The ceremonial topping-out for The Gauntlet, Magic Springs theme park's new giant suspended looping roller coaster, occurred today, indicating the achievement of the highest point on the ride.

At 11 stories tall, the huge yellow steel superstructure's highest point was topped with the traditional evergreen tree by engineers and construction workers as park officials and interested Hot Springs residents observed.

"We are on track to have The Gauntlet ready for our first guests of 2004 when the park opens April 10," said Vicki Berni, general manager of Magic Springs & Crystal Falls. "With the topping-out today, The Gauntlet stands as an impressive and exciting testament to the cooperation of the citizens of Hot Springs, the state of Arkansas and Magic Springs. We believe it will bring thousands of new visitors to Magic Springs and the rest of Garland County beginning in April."

The name for The Gauntlet was chosen in a contest to "Name the Coaster" conducted by four Arkansas radio stations that are part of the Citadel Broadcasting Company. Becky Branch of Jacksonville submitted the winning name and will receive free season passes and other gifts from Magic Springs & Crystal Falls, Berni said.

"The Gauntlet is pretty impressive as the construction progresses," Berni said, "but it will be even more impressive as about 1,000 riders per hour enjoy it beginning April 10. With The Gauntlet and the expansion of our successful Timberwood Amphitheater summer concert series to 12 shows this year, we expect big things for 2004 and beyond."

The Gauntlet cost $7 million and was financed with the help of revenue bonds approved without additional taxes by the voters of Hot Springs.

Magic Springs & Crystal Falls, Arkansas' biggest theme park, is located on Highway 70 West in Hot Springs, 45 minutes from Little Rock.
