Dreamland (Seoul, South Korea)

- Darren Mullins

This morning, I got out of bed and decided to go to an amusement park since the weather was good. I chose Dreamland in Seoul as the park I would visit. Before I talk about my visit there, I want to talk about the original Dreamland at Coney Island in New York. The original Dreamland didn't last very long, but parks around the world have copied the Dreamland name. Two of these parks are in Korea and both of them are owned by the same people. One is in Wonju and the other is in Seoul. I have visited both of them.

Dreamland in Seoul is home to three coasters, several carnival rides, a waterpark and a small petting zoo. Dreamland is located inside of the Seoul city limits. It is an urban amusement park much like Kennywood. I had last visited this park about two years ago. Nothing much has changed in that time other than the S & S Space Shot has been removed. It was the newest ride in the park. I have no clue as to where it was sent.

After entering the park, I got in line for the Jet Coaster, which is one of the forerunners of the modern hypercoaster. This coaster is fast and has a couple of spots of airtime. It can be enjoyed by most memebers of the family. The Atomic Coaster is a Meshio shuttle loop that first travels through the course backwards. I like it better than Vekoma Boomerangs, but not as much as Anton's shuttle loops. The Dragon is a single helix Zamperla coaster that is enjoyable.

Other rides at Dreamland include a three story fun house with many different things like a barrel, moving steps, turntables and other things. There are two Music Express rides. They share the same name, but one is more like a Flying Bob. There is a Tagoda Disco ride, which is found in many Korean parks, but I have never seen one at an American park. There is a nice double decker carousel at the park, a pirate ship and two bumper car rides as well.

I had a great time at Dreamland. It opened in 1987 and most of the rides could use a fresh coat of paint, but the park seemed to be doing well today as it was somewhat busy.
